History of The Famous Camp Shiloh
Bob DeGroot, Mark Hewitt, Dave Vis, Irv Timmermans and Gord VanKampen, all members of Third Christian Reformed Church at the time, decided that it was time to fill a void in junior high Christian ministry in Whatcom County especially since churches weren't providing outstanding junior high ministry during the school year and especially not during the summers, and so in 1994 the inter-denominational Camp Shiloh was born.
The name Shiloh comes from the Old Testament where Samuel as a boy heard the voice of God at a place called Shiloh - he responded with "speak, Lord, for your servant is listening" and that is the prayer for Camp Shiloh, that kids hear the gospel in a fresh high energy youth oriented way that may not be what they are used to, but then respond to what they have heard and been taught in their families, churches, and schools.
The first few years of Camp were held at Camp Kirby on Samish Island in Skagit County. The first year was small with 35 campers and fewer than 10 staff members for two weeks in August. In 1995 9th Graders were invited to come and from there the Camp began to grow. Now, 10 years later, and at Bay Horizon Park the average amount of campers per week has grown to almost 90 with over 30 staff members, including a speaker, worship team, kitchen staff, and full time nurse. Kids have come from Canada, California, and even the Midwest, to this camp that started with such humble beginnings.
As we look to the next ten years it is hard to see what God has planned for Camp Shiloh. We do know though, that God through his undeniable goodness, will lead us to a place that he has planned.
